European Union Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans working on combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted figures that were central to campaigns to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the move.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders contend the rules are essential to control hate speech and disinformation.

This row risks becoming part of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and European institutions.
