Numerous People Missing After Vessel Carrying Two Hundred Asylum Seekers Sinks in waters off The Gambia.
A minimum of seven souls have perished and numerous others remain unaccounted for after a vessel carrying around 200 people attempting to reach Europe capsized off the coast of the Gambian coast, reports confirm.
The boat overturned on Wednesday midnight in the vicinity of Jinack in the northern bank region and it was afterwards located "beached on a shoal", the Gambian military authorities said in a statement.
Nearly one hundred people were pulled to safety and a search is continuing for those still missing who were traveling on the sunken boat that was en route to the Canary Islands of Spain.
The dangerous voyage over the Atlantic Ocean has emerged as a rising pathway for migrants from Africa seeking entry into the EU.
Nearly 47,000 individuals made it to the Canary Islands in 2024 and figures suggest over 9,000 people have lost their lives trying.
Rescue Operation
Following the Wednesday incident, The Gambian Navy initiated a rescue mission, using several naval vessels and a commercial fishing craft that offered help, the military said.
Officials state a number of those who died are not Gambian nationals and that their identities are still being verified.
The deceased of the seven people who died have been recovered, and a dozen of the saved are described as being in grave health and receiving urgent medical care.
A Common Migration Route
The Gambia is a common pathway taken by migrants attempting to enter European countries, often on perilous trips across ocean and terrain.
Recently, the European bloc has forged deals with multiple North African nations with the goal of reducing undocumented migration.
