This New Horror Film Is Now Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Partnership.

Consider this a test for long-term couples who enjoy the horror genre: Sit down with your significant other and stream Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie recently had its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. At first glance, it may seem like standard body horror, but within Together exists a profound contemplation about the ways we decide to love one another.

An Introductory Film Delving into Partnership Complexities

Together represents the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have been together for over ten years. Having wed in reality in 2017, Franco and Brie bring a special spark to their characters, expertly portraying both the joys and frustrations of a committed partnership.

The story commences when the couple move from the big city to the country for her career. A familiar story element, sure, but that’s primarily where the tropes cease. Together becomes as much a psychological exploration of the couple's dynamic as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While walking near their country house, a tempest descends, and Millie and Tim fall into an hole in the earth. After spending the night there and finally finding a way out, a strange force takes hold of the pair. This force compels a supernatural closeness between them that goes exceeding simple connection.

The whole movie is a gradually intensifying horror experience, interspersing elements of hallucinatory nightmares, disturbing (but not excessively graphic) physical transformations, and authentically humorous exchanges (sometimes amidst something horrific). The director weaves these elements together expertly and presents them in a gradually swelling sense of impending doom.

Complex Characterizations

A significant portion of Together is solely Brie and Franco, and they masterfully render numerous complexities to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie’s confidence and feeling of intimacy is suffering due to a distance. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his hesitance to focus on anything other than his struggling artistic pursuits inexorably rises.

Tim, on the other hand feels trapped and separated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve relocated rural and removed from his social circle. He is terrified of the notion of totally forfeiting his personal autonomy in his partner. This fear is amplified by the reality he lacks a driver's license and is dependent on Millie for mobility.

Shanks’ smartest move is that he refrains from painting one partner or the other the obvious villain.

The couple grapple with the sort of issues that arise in most partnerships after ten years. Deep down, they continue to care for one another. They share moments of joy, provide solace, and open up at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable undercurrent of doubt about their bond.

Thematic Depth

While the otherworldly presence in Together symbolize these anxieties of codependency and fully committing to a partner, the symbolism avoids being clumsy or pretentious. Instead, these visceral horror elements present a brilliant analogue to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the horror and the drama serve the other in harmony.

A Debated Finale

Together’s final act, which remains unspoiled, has left audiences divided on the movie's final takeaway about unhealthy partnerships. It has been said that those not in relationships have interpreted the film as a compelling reason for avoiding commitment. On the other hand, a few pairs who were in conflict found that the film ended up guiding them to make up.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own response could act as a great barometer of how you perceive partnership. Will the conclusion sow a sense of discomfort and fear, or a positive outlook on love? Will you recognize your own traits in one of the characters and yell at the screen, or simply look at your partner and utter, “I’d do that for you”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an exploration you can experience today.

Together is available to watch on Hulu at present.
